Kyabu Budha

In the remote highlands of Nepal, leadership often grows from necessity — shaped by the harsh terrain, quiet resilience, and deep love for one’s homeland. One such leader was Kyabu Budha, the first elected representative from Dolpa after the establishment of democracy in Nepal.

When Nepal transitioned into a democratic era in the early 1990s, many districts — especially remote ones like Dolpa — were taking their first steps toward political representation and development. Amidst that transformation, Kyabu Budha made history by becoming the very first voice of Dolpa in the national political arena, elected as a Member of Parliament in 1991 under the Nepali Congress party.

But Kyabu Budha was not just a political figure — he was a visionary.

During his tenure, he played a key role in initiating the Jairigad Hydropower Project, a milestone for Dolpa at a time when electricity was a dream for many. His commitment helped turn that dream into reality. The project brought much-needed light and energy to Dunai and several wards of Thuli Bheri and Tripurakot Municipalities, making daily life easier and enabling local businesses, schools, and hospitals to function more reliably.

Even today, long after his term, the impact of the Jairigad Hydropower Project continues to be felt, quietly powering the lives of people in the heart of Dolpa.

Kyabu Budha’s story is a reminder of how local leadership can drive lasting change. He stood at the intersection of tradition and progress — a bridge between Dolpa’s past and its future.

As we look toward developing and preserving our region, it is important to remember and honor pioneers like him — people who lit the way, both figuratively and literally.

🕯️ Thank you, Kyabu Budha, for your service to Dolpa.
